Marantz PMD660– Igniting the Podcasting Community

by Peter Pagageorge

One thing is certain, “Everyone Wants to Be Heard” and Podcasting is the new frontier for their voice. This new world is confusing to most, but in layman’s terms, it is a way to have your recording distributed for free. And, if people like it, they have a way to automatically download your next recording when you post it.

The free software and web sites that allow this to happen have the marketing power of Apple IPOD and other expanding technologies. This popularity is gaining the attention of large corporations and media channels besides the tech-savvy individuals that started this phenomenon. It is not uncommon for a house painter by trade have a Podcast show with up to 30,000 subscribers.

These “shows” can range in subjects from sports to cooking; music to senseless rambling; even radio, TV segments and interviews. The attraction to podcasting is its automated system. Once you “subscribe” to a podcast, your MP3 player will automatically load the content when a new show is posted to the service.

As everyone tries to find ways to capitalize on this new communication vehicle, one thing is clear: no matter what your subject, you need a good device to record your show. Many early Podcasters would record audio directly into the computer to create their shows. When they wanted to record away from their computer, they used various recording devices that were lacking in necessary features and had poor recording quality.

At the first annual Podcasting Convention, an attendee stated, “I heard that if you want to record professionally in the field, you need a Marantz Professional recorder.” Marantz Professional has served the traditional broadcast reporter application for more than 25 years with professional portable cassette, minidisk and DAT recorders. The recent jump to compact flash recording has ignited the Podcasting community because the recorded MP3 or WAV file can be immediately transferred to the computer to send to their audience.

The PMD660 with the RC600 mic remote and PRC660 reporter case is the most popular Podcasting system. The PMD670 and PMD671 also provide podcasters with enhanced features for specialized recording environments. Plus, the new CDR420 workstation is ideal for conference recording and archiving of all your shows.
